New Website with more Khmer food and experiences

More Khmer food and experiences

It took us about a month of hard work with our friends at Angkor Design, but finally we are here: Our new website about popular Khmer food, great hosts and Cambodian culture is online. What’s new?

New Website with more Khmer food and experiences

We will focus more on the experience guests can get when visit a host. Dine With The Locals gives travelers a full experience of life in Cambodia, cooking in Cambodia and learn about the daily life in Cambodia. That’s why added the experience section: Each host offers something special beside the Khmer food and we will get deeper into in this part of the website. More experiences in Cambodia coming soon.

We also give you a faster and easier way to jump right to the city where you are (or plan to go). So far we are in Battambang, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Beantey Meanchey. But we are working hard to get hosts in Kampot and Mondulkiri next.

Search for Khmer food and Cambodian culture

We now have a search, in case you are interested in s special kind of meal or Khmer food. Just type in what you are looking for. If you cannot find what you are looking for we will get a message and will improve this in the near future.

Another big change is the booking interface. We are partner with Bokun now, a booking engine recently bought by Tripadvisor. It gives us more exposure to international markets and also state-of-the-art technology and interfaces. We also have instant booking now, so we can confirm a booking for Khmer food and experience immediately. There is still s small chance that our host is for unforeseeable reasons unavailable. In this case we will get in touch with you and offer an alternative.

We hope you like our new design. If you find something that’s not working, please let us know. We appreciate any feedback and suggestions, how we can improve. Finally a special thank to Andy from Angkor Design and our Chief Technology Consultant Sinal from Bayonia. Both did great job to get the new design up and running.

Experience local life in Cambodia

One of the most recent trends in the travel industry are authentic experiences. While overtourism let travelers reconsider to go to the hotspots in a country, they may change to lesser known, but more individual destinations like experience local life in Cambodia when you visit families. The travelmarket report recently wrote: “More and more travelers are demanding an “authentic” travel experience, a trend that experts say plays into the hands of experienced, high-touch travel agents who can help consumers sift through the vast array of opportunities the world offers. According to a recent Expedia survey, 76% of baby boomers rate experiencing authentic local culture as “the most important” aspect of their decision making, while 62% of Generation X consumers rate local culture most important.”

If you are looking for authentic experiences, you may have to look very close. Nowadays many classic tour packages are just wrapped in new paper. Village tours and cooking classes, food tours and home stays are all a kind of authentic and locals experience. But the are also organized, and quite often there is not much time to interact with locals. Also, interpreters and tour guides may help to communicate, but can be a barrier as well. We are a cooking class with families.

Time needed to experience local life in Cambodia

At Dine With The Locals we do not provide guided tours. We let you have the full experience with the host family, without interference. Our hosts are not working in the tourism industry, their houses are private and not open to the public. Also, the tour itself is private: It’s just you, the people traveling with you and a Khmer family. If you are curious enough, you will get a much deeper understanding of the daily life, the dreams and challenges of locals in Cambodia. Dine With The Locals means that you cook with locals, eat with locals and experience local life in Cambodia.

You can stay one or two hours, and even longer if the hosts have time. We had guests staying for 4 hours with our host Vannak Khun in Phnom Penh and talking about modern art. We had even requests if guests can stay overnight at our host in Banteay Meanchey, because it was so beautiful there (we do not provide accommodation yet).

So much to learn from locals

One great example of local life is the use of the mortar. In Khmer its called tabal, and we use it as well in the official name of our company tabalr technologies Co. Ltd. It is one of the most common tools used in Khmer cuisine. In former times, it was the only way to blend spices and other ingredients. But even now, in the age of electricity, most Khmer will use the mortar instead of the blender. The latter is mostly used to make fruit shakes. When you make the Kroeung spice paste with your hands, crashing the lemongras and tumeric until it becomes a thick paste, you understand what local life is.

Eat with locals at a Khmer silk farm

One of the great opportunities we have in Cambodia is being close to many exciting businesses . One is the silk farm our host Naysim and her family own. Here you can learn about Khmer silk and have a meal with locals. The farm’s location is just 20 minutes from Phnom Penh center. After crossing the Japanese bridge you will board the ferry and afterwards it’s already close by on the small peninsula.

Naysim keeps the Khmer silk making tradition alive.

The production of silk in Cambodia has a long tradition. Some say the history of silk production dates back to the 12th century. For that reason you can see some ancient reliefs about silk at Angkor Wat. But other than Thailand, where silk became a major export good, Cambodian silk weavers produce mainly for the local markets. Zhou Daguan, who came to Cambodia from China in the 13th century, enjoyed the meal with locals and the raw silk. Most of the silk producers export their goods to China.

Visitors can have a meal with locals and learn weaving Khmer silk.

Naysim keeps the tradition of silk production and weaving alive. Her house is family place and silk farm at the same time. Visitors watch the production of silk from the very beginning, when the silk worm is still on its favorite food, the mulberry tree. Naysim waits for the worms to form a cocoon. Then she boils the cocoon and the raw silk thread gets out. She has to spin the threats first, and some get a but of dye for colorful fabrics.. Vistors can tray to use the weaving table and learn about the handicraft.

Part of the meal with locals is watching and helping preparing it.

After the silk lessons Naysim walks straight to the kitchen. She prepares a delicious Khmer meal with three different dishes. There are not many authentic ways to have a meal with locals and get so much insight about the daily life. The menu:

  • Beef Lok Lak: The Khmer classic with premium local beef, tomatoes and cucumbers, and the very special dip made from leman, pepper and salt.
  • Chha Bonlea: fried mixed vegetables with oyster oil
  • Samlor machu Kreoung sach kor: Beef sour soup which The sour flavor of the soup comes from the use of tamarind or green leaves tamarind, and certain tangy vegetables such as tomato and pineapple, as well as Tiliacora triandra leaves.

At the end you will have a local style lunch with delicious Khmer food.

If the season is right (usually from March to June), trees are full of mangos. Guest can pick some and have them as a sweet dessert or can even take some home. We recommend to visit Naysim for a meal with locals during lunch time to avoid a trip back in the dark. You can book it online here.

Crocodile meat in Siem Reap in TV-Show

We will soon become famous! Recently we had a film-team from Germany visiting our host Sarat in Siem Reap. For now we cannot tell much more about what exactly they were filming for (but will do once it’s broadcasted). But it was an interesting experience, in particular the crocodile meat in Siem Reap.

"Filming

We had a filmteam visiting us in Siem Reap. Part of our offer was to try crocodile..

For Sarat it was the first time to be on camera. She also had to speak English, what was not a problem at all. Thomas then translated it to German. It took the team around 3 hours in total. They found it interesting to see the way of preparing Khmer food. The camera closed up to the mortar with the fresh spice paste , but also to the pan. There was yummy fish sizzling in oil before then mixed with spices.

"Get

Sarat gets a microphone on her shirt – first time on camera!

Another interesting part was to see the original wooden house of a Khmer family. A visit to a Khmer home is always surprising and impressive to guests from western countries. The wooden floor and walls makes it cool even in hot days. Under the house is then some even cooler place.

"Filming

The team was interested in the daily life of a Khmer family.

The mushroom farm is also an interesting experience too many. Mushrooms in Europa grow usually in dark, moisture places like cellars and bars. Here in Cambodia it’s a hut with a roof and protecting nets on the side.

Last but not least the highlight: we usually don’t advertise that Sarat’s family also owns some crocodiles. And it was lucky day, they got fed with a lot of fish. The crocodiles are between 8 and 10 years old, and the lay eggs once a year. The family then sells the fertilized eggs to breeders. Sarat cooks then yummy omelette with the unfertilized eggs. And at the end, Sarat had some delicious pan fried spicy crocodile meat to taste – but bought from another farm.

Why a local experience in Cambodia is great

When you are traveling, most of the memorable moments are from interactions with local people. And there are many reasons why a local experience in Cambodia is something you remember. It’s better than what the guide told you for hours when visiting Angkor Wat or the Phnom Kulen . We understand and learn better with all of our senses. Something even more important is context. Reading or just listening is less efficient than watching a video. But even the best video cannot give you the experience you make when interacting with people while traveling.

Cambodia is well know for the friendly and welcoming people. Wether it is on tourists sites or somewhere at the countryside. Most of the time people will smile at you, greet you with the hands folded together as it is common in Asia to show respect. A local experience in Cambodia with people will let you feel immediatly as a friend visiting friends. Our guests at Dine With The Locals had this experience time after time. They are not customers (or pax, as the tourism industry calls them), but guests visiting a house. and they shall be treated as such.

A local experience in Cambodia means be part of the family

The range of our hosts goes from a well educated manager and an artists to organic farmers and housewifes who live in quote simple conditions. And yet, all have one thing in common: They provide you unforgettable moments with a truly local experience in Cambodia. It starts with the preparation of the meal: You join them watching or even helping. People in Cambodia are easy going and appreciate any community. So cleaning the fish or peeling green mango is something you should definetly do.

Saying hello to the family’s dog can be another local experience in Cambodia.

Another part ist the conversation. Some of our hosts speak English quite fluent. Some speak just basic English. But you will have a conversation with all of them. We understand a conversation as interaction, not just communication in one language. If you can not speak Khmer, you will find another way of communication. And our hosts will do, when they can’t find the proper English words. That is the fun part with a local experience in Cambodia. and that’s is the way, we create unforgettable memories at Dine With The Locals.

5 reasons for homemade Khmer food

When it comes to authentic food, nearly every restaurant and street stall will claim that they are offering homemade Khmer food in Cambodia. But eben if they do their best, it’s in most cases not even close to the Cambodian food you get in the homes of the locals.

Reason 1: We have enough time

When you order food in a restaurant, you expect the food delivered as fast as possible. But many Khmer dishes do need time to be prepared. So they have to be made in advance, or at least partly prepared, and then warmed up for you. That’s not the case with homemade Khmer food.

Reason 2: Freshness and homemade Khmer food

The food used by our hosts is made of fresh ingredients from the market and their garden.
The food used by our hosts is made of fresh ingredients from the market and their garden.

Our hosts will go to the market on the day of the booking, and when it’s dinner they even go to the afternoon market. This way they can ensure that the ingredients are fresh. The leaves they use are harvested just hours ago, the vegetables arrived in the morning from the farm and the chicken, pigs or cows were slaughtered a day or just hours before.

Reason 3: Watch how they prepare the food

Watch our hosts prepare the meals, or even help to get the best homemade Khmer food experience.
Watch our hosts prepare the meals, or even help to get the best homemade Khmer food experience.

Our hosts have nothing to hide, and that’s why we encourage you to come a bit earlier and watch them preparing the food or even help. The Cambodia way of cooking is not totally different from western cooking. But you will see some differently tools, like the mortar for making spice paste, or the cleaver for cutting everything from meat to vegetables. Round wooden boards are common as well. Some of our hosts will still use open fire, most changed to gas already.

Reason 4: No processed food

The rice we use is Cambodia rice, in most cases from the family’s farm just outside town. All vegetables grow in Cambodia or the neighboring countries. The important thing about homemade Khmer food : everything is made from scratch. Our hosts don’t just open a bag and heat it. They don’t even go to a supermarket to buy the ingredients. Many leaves and even ginger and galangal grow in the garden anyway.

Reason 5: Homemade Khmer food – made with love

Our hosts Mom and Sam: Homemade Khmer food means for them using the morning glory they planted, grew and harvested in their backyard.

Connecting travelers with locals means for us connecting people. at Dine With The Locals we focus on the human touch. It is exiting for travelers to meet locals people, and it’s equally special for locals to have foreigners in the their house or premises. And this extends as well to the way the hosts prepare the food: with love and passion. Our hosts are proud to present you Khmer culture and cuisine, and that’s why they take special care of you and the yummy dishes.

There is another reason why homemade Khmer food is better: Because for you as a traveler it means the upmost authenticity. Nowhere else you can experience the locals food, culture and lifestyle. At Dine With The Locals we provide this unique experience all over Cambodia.

Things to do in Battambang

While Battambang is the second biggest city in Cambodia, travelers still haven’t discovered it’s full potential. For a long time it was a industrial town, but the downtown area has kept it’s charme. There are many thing to do in Battambang, and some are of course related to food.

Most travelers will look for the famous bamboo train in Battambang. During the time when Cambodia was under UN authority, locals made their own lorries and used the old rails to transport good and people – and bamboo. Since Cambodia has it’s civil government, the lorries were still used, but also discovered from the first tourists. Today there are two Bamboo trains, the original and a new one. Forget about the new one, it’s more a local attraction and only goes just in one direction and back.

Explore the surroundings of Battambang

Battambang is also know for the hills around with temples and remains of the Khmer Rouge and the civil war. One of the things to do in Battambang is either renting a bicycle or getting a tuk tuk and go to Phnom Sampov. There is the bat cave (best late afternoon). but also the a cave where the skulls of the fallen and killed Khmer displayed.

Things to do in Battabang when hungry

After your excursion you may get hungry, and Battambang is a good place if you like food. It’s famous for grilled rats from the rice fields, but that’s not everybody’s taste. One the list of things to do in Battambang should be a visit at the organic farm run by our host Yem Panha. She is passionate about food and will not only prepare a delicious set of Khmer food, but also take you to a tour around the farm.

Yem Panha runs an organic farm near Battambang (15 min drive), and is passionate about food and healthy lifestyle.

Another special place for breakfast is the R1 restaurant. You have to come early, because after 8am most of the popular dishes are sold out. What makes it so special ist the cooked black chicken on rice. It is well know with locals in Battambang. And if you are a bit adventurous, then have a pork brain soup on the street 2017 not far from Emerald Hotel.

After your meals reserve some time to visit the galleries in Battambang. The city has a vibrant art scene. Many artists from Phnom Penh moved up north, since it’s more quiet here. The most famous place is Romcheik 5 gallery and art space, where different artists exhibit their work.
