Intro

Your local host is Ms. Pisey, who brings this walking tour to life. Born and raised in Chhloung, she moved to Phnom Penh during her studies and later worked in the travel industry in both the capital and Siem Reap. Now married with children, she has returned to her roots to run a small 2nd hand clothes shop and care for her mother.

As a storyteller with a deep passion for her hometown, she knows every historic building and local vendor. She can’t wait to share the hidden stories of Chhloung with you

Experience

Chhloung sits quietly on the banks of the Mekong, a town that somehow slipped past the tide of modernization. While much of Cambodia has transformed around it, this small riverside settlement has held onto a remarkably intact row of French colonial buildings, their faded facades carrying a century of stories.

The architecture alone is worth the journey. At the heart of it stands Le Relais de Chhlong, a mansion dating from 1916 that now operates as a hotel, its bones still graceful after all these years. Around it, neighboring buildings wear their age openly, each one a little different from the last.

Your guide is Ms. Pisey, who grew up in Chhloung and eventually found her way back. That personal connection shows. She doesn’t recite history so much as share it, the way someone does when they actually care about a place.

The tour sets off from Le Relais de Chhlong and moves at an unhurried pace along the main colonial street. Ms. Pisey fills in the gaps between the buildings, giving context to what you’re seeing. A stop at the local market offers a change of pace: fresh fruit, friendly vendors, and the kind of everyday life that no guidebook quite captures.

For anyone looking to step away from the well-worn tourist trail, Chhloung offers something genuinely rare: a corner of Cambodia that still feels like itself.

This walking tour takes between 1 and 2 hours, leading you along the Mekong River and through the narrow streets of the local market and past historic colonial buildings. It is a peaceful walk, and by starting early, you’ll have the chance to see many local artisans at work along the way.
